The state of Ohio gets its name from the Iroquois word ohi-yo, which means “great river.” The name “Ohio” just sounds friendly, doesn’t it? Say O-HI-O slowly–it makes you smile for good reason! There are so many wonderful things about this state that everyone should know about, including the amazing Ohio scholarships and resources. Check out the following list and apply for what you are eligible for!

Top Ohio scholarships

Ohio War Orphan & Severely Disabled Veterans’ Children Scholarship

• Eligibility: Students must be Ohio residents enrolled full-time in undergraduate study pursuing an associate or bachelor’s degree at an eligible Ohio college or university. Applicants between the ages of 16 and 24 are eligible
• Amount: Selected students attending Ohio public institutions will be funded 100% of tuition and general fees. Students attending private institutions will receive an annual award amount of $8,575
• Deadline: May 15th of every year

Nurse Education Assistance Loan Program (NEALP)

• Eligibility: NEALP provides financial assistance to Ohio students enrolled for at least half-time study (or accepted for enrollment) in an approved Ohio nurse education program
• Amount: Up to $12,000
• Deadline: July 15th of each year

Ohio College Opportunity Grant (OCOG)

• Eligibility: Ohio residents in an associate’s degree, first bachelor’s degree, or nurse program at an eligible Ohio institution with an EFC (Expected Family Contribution) of $2190 or less and a maximum household income of $96,000
• Amount: Varies
• Deadline: October 1st of each year

Horatio Alger Ohio Scholarships

• Eligibility: High school seniors in the United States with demonstrated financial need
• Amount: $10,000
• Deadline: October 25, 2021 (opens August 1)

Ohio colleges & universities

While Ohio has a rich history, it is a happening place today, especially in regard to education. Let’s just say that Ohio knows a thing or two about supporting students as they move on up in the world (think seven presidents and the first human on the moon!). We compiled a list of college and university scholarships for lifelong Buckeyes and those thinking about taking advantage of the rich educational offerings in the great state of Ohio.

Bowling Green State University

• Eligibility: Applicants must have a minimum of a 3.0 GPA and 20 ACT OR 3.0 GPA and 1040 SAT
• Amount: $1,000 to $8,000 renewable scholarship
• Deadline: February 1

Case Western Reserve University

• Eligibility: Selection based on academic achievement, performance on standardized tests, leadership, artistic talent, and other personal qualities that distinguish you in the applicant pool
• Amount: Up to the full cost of attending
• Deadline: January 15

Kent State University

• Eligibility: All applicants will be considered based on GPA, rigor of courses, and overall achievement and talents
• Amount: Up to $6,000
• Deadline: February 1

Kenyon College

• Eligibility: Applicants display academic excellence (usually in the top 10% of their class) and spirited involvement in school or community activities
• Amount: $10,000 to $25,000 a year
• Deadline: January 15

Miami University–Oxford

• Eligibility: 3.5 to a 3.95+ GPA
• Amount: $1,000 to full tuition
• Deadline: December 1

Oberlin College

• Eligibility: All admitted students are considered for merit scholarships, which are based on academic achievement
• Amount: $10,000 per year
• Deadline: January 15

Ohio State University- Columbus Campus

• Eligibility: New incoming freshmen with a 3.0 to 3.5+ GPA
• Amount: Up to full cost of attendance for eight semesters of full-time enrollment, plus an enrichment grant valued at up to $3,000
• Deadline: November 15

Ohio University

• Eligibility: Selection based on academic merit as demonstrated by strength of curriculum and cumulative high school grade point average
• Amount: Varies
• Deadline: November 15

University of Cincinnati

• Eligibility: Selection is based on overall admission application (including response to the personal statement), transcript, and test scores
• Amount: $6,000 to $94,000 ($1,500 to $23,500 per year)
• Deadline: December 1

University of Dayton

• Eligibility: Merit scholarships are awarded based on a variety of criteria including GPA, test scores (if submitted) and academic rigor
• Amount: Up to $109,000 (over four years)
• Deadline: February 1
